BARCODED END FACET PRINTED PHOTONIC CHIP AND BARCODE-GUIDED DIRECT LASER WRITING

Patent Abstract: 

Direct laser writing (DLW) has been established as an important approach for the packaging of integrated photonic chips, enabling micro-optic and photonic waveguide chip-to-chip and fiber-to-chip connections. However, existing approaches, in which the laser lithography beam is oriented perpendicular to the chip surface, are limited in that they cannot write structures at any depth on chip facets, must pay special attention to the specific materials comprising the photonic chip, and usually require complicated, structure-dependent simulations. Our invention, a method to label and algorithmically locate the position of photonic waveguides (when viewed on-axis) and the associated algorithms, provides a fast and scalable solution for on-axis, facet-based DLW that can operate autonomously and address all of the aforementioned issues.
